In a revealing interview with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, musician John Mayer had a lot to talk about, and according to the singer it wasn’t all about his new album Born and Raised .
Amidst the backlash from the over share about Jessica Simpson’s skills in bed, and offensive racist comments, Mayer, 34, took to the daytime host’s platform to apologize about his odd behavior over the last few years, and his decorum during a few chosen interviews in 2010. When the singer realized it was all too much for him to handle he took a vow of silence from the press.
“I lost my head for a little while. I lost touch and I didn’t want to ask for directions,” Mayer, 34, tells Ellen DeGeneres in the interview, which airs this Tuesday. “I did a couple really dumb interviews and it woke me up.” The musician went on to talk about his head space during that time calling it, ” a very strange time.”
The decision to step away from the limelight and work on his music set Mayer on the right track saying the move was a tool, “rocketing me into adulthood.” The rocket comes in the form of his new album Born and Raised , which is out May 22. I’m glad I actually stayed out of the spotlight,” he said. “Back then I would of said, ‘Let me get out and do Ellen and explain myself.’ It was like, ‘No, idiot. Go away – be 33 and 34 instead of 28 for the fourth year.’
Unfortunately his vow of silence will have to be for a bit longer, as his throat surgery in October has left Mayer unable to sing, which has forced him to cancel his tour in lieu of another surgery which is set to happen this fall.
“I can’t sing, so I’m writing,” he tells DeGeneres. “I live in Montana – middle of nowhere. It’s really excellent. You get to a certain age where you prepare yourself for happiness. Sometimes you never remember to actually get happy. I remembered to get happy.”
Looks like John Mayer is growing up just fine!
