Ann Coulter is hating on Carly Fiorina.
The outspoken conservative pundit, lawyer, and successful author has become disillusioned with the former Hewlett-Packard CEO over her criticism of Donald Trump’s immigration reform plan, particularly his vow to end birthright citizenship.
Coulter, who is pro-life, is so enamored of Trump’s immigration proposals that she previously quipped on social media that she doesn’t care if “President” Trump performs abortions in the White House.
Like her or not, Coulter continues to crank out one best-seller after another, and in an intimation to her literary success, once claimed that she could only be fired by the American people. Coulter is also a master rhetorician and troller, particularly when she is hawking a new book (as she is currently).
Apart from building a wall for which he intends Mexico to pay for, included among Donald Trump’s recently released detailed list of immigration reform proposals is a call to end birthright citizenship, often colloquially referred to as an anchor baby.
According to the Numbers USA website, Canada and the U.S. stand alone among developed nations that offer birthright citizenship to any person born in the country even if the parents are non-citizens. Countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, France, and India are among those which have repealed laws that previously granted birthright citizenship.
Conventional wisdom on both the right and the left is that language in Section 1 of the 14th Amendment that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States…” automatically confers American citizenship on a child of an illegal alien born on U.S. soil. As such, a constitutional amendment would be required to change the law, again under the prevailing legal interpretation.
Coulter, who has just published a book on immigration, disagrees with this premise and agrees with Donald Trump , which explains her antipathy toward Carly Fiorina, who has been moving up in the presidential polling since winning the second-tier GOP debate on August 6.
Dissenters to the generally accepted legal doctrine insist that persons born in America to illegal alien parents are “subject to the jurisdiction” of their home country, not the U.S., and thus outside the scope of the 14th Amendment.
“Trump argued that the 14th amendment of the Constitution, which establishes birthright citizenship, was intended to declare newly free slaves as citizens of the United States. The amendment, Trump said, did not apply to the children of undocumented immigrants who are born here while their parents live in the country illegally,” the International Business Times explained .
The Sharknado 3 star made her feelings clear about Carly Fiorina during an interview on Mike Gallagher’s radio show, in which also denounced affirmative action allegedly favoring Fiorina by “very sweet” Republicans.
“I’ve turned against her…with the hot, hot hate of a thousand suns … among the attacks I saw on the magnificent Donald Trump immigration plan was that he wants to get rid of anchor babies, and you can read to section in my book, it’s very short. [Birthright citizenship] is not from the 14th Amendment..the 14th Amendment came after the Civil War…it wasn’t about letting illegal aliens to run across the border, drop a baby and say, ‘haha, you missed me, I’m a citizen now.’ Do you think the framers of the 14th Amendment, that’s what they were hoping to do? Both she and Chris Christie, I saw her saying on TV yesterday, ‘well, you’ll need a constitutional amendment to do that.’ That’s crazy…”
Coulter added that the highly-respected federal judge Richard Posner and (earlier in his career) U.S. Senate minority leader Harry Reed, a Nevada Democrat, have both maintained that birthright citizenship has nothing to do with the U.S. Constitution.
