Well there goes that Mayan end of year Doomsday calendar theory apocalypse fanatics have been quoting endlessly for years. Researchers recently discovered Mayan astronomical calculations that date thousands of years past 2012.
The discovery according to National Geographic was found inside a Mayan ruin in Xultan, Guatemala where archaeologists discovered a small room that was used in the 9th-century for record-keeping.
Speaking to Science a lead researcher told:
“So much for the supposed end of the world,” while adding, “We keep looking for endings. The Maya were looking for a guarantee that nothing would change. It’s an entirely different mindset.”
While the hieroglyphics are still being deciphered archaeologists believe they will learn far more about Mayan society than a simple look at their calendar and astrological observations.
According to another scientist:
“To be uncovering glyphs and reading them right off the wall—to be the first one in 1,200 years to read something? I mean, it’s pretty wild.”
Mayan researcher David Freidelof Washington University in St. Louis tells National Geographic:
“The Maya at Xultún were likely less concerned with the end of the world than the end of their world.”
In the meantime archaeologist William Saturno of Boston University tells USA Today:
“The numbers we found indicate an obsession with time and cycles of time, some of them very large. Maya scribes most likely transcribed the numbers on the wall in this room into (books) just like the ones later seen by conquistadors.”
Are you surprised to learn that the Mayan’s were not predicting the end of the world in 2012?
