Wrigley Field received a bomb threat Sunday after the game between the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs. The stadium was evacuated and the bomb squad was brought in, complete with bomb sniffing dogs. CBS Sports is reporting that the evacuation call happened at about 6 p.m. local time and the sweep took about 40 minutes for the police to complete.
After the incident, the Cubs released this statement .
“Following our game this afternoon, we received a bomb threat and took swift action to clear the few remaining fans, players, staff and media from the ballpark. After a thorough search by law enforcement, no evidence was found to suggest this threat was credible. We take safety at Wrigley Field seriously and are working with law enforcement authorities to pursue the person who initiated this threat.”
As for the action on the field the Cubs defeated the Giants, 2-0, to complete a four game sweep of the defending champions. As reported on earlier here at the Inquisitr this was a huge series for both teams and the Cubs took the Giants to the woodshed and didn’t feel one bit of remorse for doing it. On Sunday Jake Arrieta tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his 13th win of the season. Justin Grimm and Hector Rendon experienced a couple of hiccups along the way, but they were able to keep the shutout intact. The offense for the Cubs came from the bats Kris Bryant and Addison Russell, who each drove in a run.
The win was the Cubs ninth in their last ten games and leaves them in the second wild card spot 3 1/2 games ahead of the Giants. The Cubs still remain 8 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central and three games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The bomb threat after the game wasn’t the only scary thing that happened at Wrigley Field on Sunday. Giants outfielder Nori Aoki was hit in the helmet in the third inning. Aoki was able to walk off the field with a little help from the Giants trainer. MLB.com is reporting that Aoki is okay and will continue to be monitored.
Baseball action will return to Wrigley Field on Tuesday as the Cubs open up a three game series with the Milwaukee Brewers.
