Arizona’s Republican Governor Jan Brewer signed a bill on Friday that will ban planned parenthood , and other clinics that offer abortions. This is just the latest in the GOP’s war against Planned Parenthood.
In a statement she made after she signed the bill on Friday, Brewer said:
“This is a common sense law that tightens existing state regulations and closes loopholes in order to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund abortions, whether directly or indirectly. By signing this measure into law, I stand with the majority of Americans who oppose the use of taxpayer funds for abortion.”
Planned Parenthood Arizona’s president and CEO, Bryan Howard, said in a prepared statement that:
“We are most concerned about the women and men who could be forced to go without health care as a result of this bill. We remain committed to providing Arizona communities with the professional, nonjudgmental and confidential health care they have relied on for 78 years.”
The Planned Parenthood ban in Arizona will interrupt 20,000 women from being able to receive preventative health care and family planning services from the organization. Like in Texas, they state that they will consider a legal challenge.
The measure will ban funds from clinics that also provide abortions. While there is already a law in place that bans the use of public money for abortions, Republicans are reportedly trying to guarantee that no public money goes for abortions.
Anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List considers the bill a “major victory.” Marilyn Musgrave, vice president of government affairs for the organization, wrote that:
“Abortion-centered businesses like Planned Parenthood do not need or deserve taxpayer dollars.”
Texas lawmakers passed a similar law in 2011 , but a Federal Appeals Court ruled on Friday that it was unconstitutional. Texas plans to appeal.
