A stepdad shoots his daughter’s boyfriend in Florida, and the story is making headlines today. According to Click Orlando , the incident happened inside a home in Apopka. The 16-year-old boyfriend was confronted by Alvin Knight , 50, and one of his friends, both men allegedly holding shotguns.

Police say that the teen wanted to show the men that he wasn’t afraid of them, so he grabbed the barrel of one of the guns and held it to his own head.

“Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Paul Hopkins said the boy grabbed the barrel of the shotgun held by the stepfather, Alvin Knight, and was shot after the teen pointed the gun at his own face to show that he wasn’t scared of Knight. The teenager was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.”

According to The Republic , a bullet grazed the boy’s head, but he is expected to be okay.

The stepdad that shot the boyfriend has been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm. Knight will be in court to face charges soon, but it is unknown if he has an attorney. A motive behind this shooting is unclear, but reports seem to suggest that Knight just didn’t care for his stepdaughter’s beau.

Back in March, the Inquisitr reported a story about a man shooting his son because his son drank the last of the orange juice.

“Baton Rouge police said that [Eldridge Dukes, 58,] fired several shots at the teen, and ultimately succeeded at hitting him. In the rear. The teen fell to the ground; when police arrived on the scene, they found him laying in the driveway. The victim was shortly afterward taken to Baton Rouge General Mid City Hospital for treatment. His injuries were reported as “non-life-threatening.”

Stories like these reignite the great gun debate, and people tend to weigh in on whether or not guns should be outlawed.

When a stepdad shoots his step-daughter’s boyfriend without much of a reason – what reason could he have that would make it okay, really? – many people tend to wonder if guns are getting into the hands of people who aren’t using them properly or for the right reasons (i.e. self defense). Of course there are two sides to this debate, and the “right to bear arms” often comes into play.

Do you think that there should be additional screenings for people to own guns? Do you think incidents like either of the two above should make people rethink gun ownership and the gun laws in the U.S? Sound off in the comments below.
