Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice brings us Ben Affleck as Batman, and if you were surprised at Warner Bros. casting, you were not alone.
Any superhero fan knows that Batman is an iconic character in comics, and after Christian Bale’s iconic portrayal, not many were thinking of seeing an aging Dark Knight. In the much talked about latest issue of Entertainment Weekly — which features “The Trinity” on its cover — Affleck says that at first, he questioned director Zack Snyder’s decision to cast him.
“My first reaction was, ‘Are you sure?’At the time I was 40-41, and had just finished Argo , and I felt like ‘This seems like a strange way to get to Batman.’ But Zack convinced me.”
To say that Ben Affleck’s casting as Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was controversial would be an understatement. Angry fans started online petitions to have him removed immediately, and many wondered if the studio and Snyder had lost their minds. However, some believed there was surely a method to the madness.
Affleck also discussed a few more details about his character in Snyder’s version. What we knew for sure is that this was an “older” more “mature” version of the popular comic character.
“He really keeps up the image of the playboy, actively. So you have more of a dichotomy which I thought was really fun, and a little sad, like the aging playboy.”
Ben Affleck — who is also an Oscar-winning director with Argo — says that one of the other motivations in accepting the legendary role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was his curiosity about how a mega production such as this comes about. Affleck is rumored to be the director of a stand-alone Batman film scheduled for 2018, The Batman , which he will direct himself, according to rumors previously reported by the Inquisitr .
“I thought if I was going to direct a movie like this, which I would like to do at some point, I need to have something of a refresher course of how these movies are done.”
Ben Affleck and most of his co-stars, including Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), and Amy Adams (Lois Lane), and director Zack Snyder will be featured during the Warner Bros. panel at the San Diego Comic-Con next week, representing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . We are told that a second teaser trailer will be shown in Hall H, which will later be released worldwide.
