A woman involved in a fall at Colorado’s Royal Gorge has died.
According to Yahoo! News , a 44-year-old woman was visiting an observation deck that overlooked the Royal Gorge canyon, when she fell 400 feet to her death . While police are investigating Monday’s incident, they do believe that this was just a tragic accident, and that the woman just tripped or lost her footing before plummeting over the edge.
“The victim fell from a platform at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, just northeast of a landmark bridge than spans a chasm 1,000 feet (300 meters) above the Arkansas River, the Canon City Police Department said in a statement.”
The woman who fell at the Royal Gorge was reported missing Monday night. She had last been seen on the bridge, which extends over 1,200 feet. Rescue crews began combing the area, but had to suspend their search because it was too dangerous in the overnight hours.
The woman’s body was located shortly after the search resumed on Tuesday morning.
“Early on Tuesday, the Fremont County Search and Rescue Team located the woman’s body on a cliff face, 400 feet below the observation deck, police said.”
According to Fox 21 News , the woman’s body has been brought to the coroner’s office . Her official cause of death will soon be determined, but injuries sustained in the fall are suspected at this time. Police have chosen not to release her identity at this time. It is unknown if she had been at Royal Gorge with family or friends, or if she was alone before she fell.
The woman’s fall at Royal Gorge is undoubtedly tragic, and sadly not the first story of its kind this year. Back in January, the Inquisitr reported that a woman fell to her death after a marriage proposal. According to the report, 29-year-old Dimitrina Dimitrova was so excited when her boyfriend proposed in Ibiza, she started jumping up and down. She ended up losing her balance and falling off of a cliff.
“Her boyfriend lived and worked on Ibiza. She had arrived two days earlier to visit him and look for work. She fell seconds after her partner surprised her by proposing to her as she jumped up and down with emotion.”
Apparently some people don’t seem to realize the dangers of being in areas that are up high, and extra caution is advised when walking on a cliff, or sightseeing in an area that is at a higher elevation.
