Robinson Cano suffered an injury on Saturday, June 27, against the Los Angeles Angels. Cano was hit in the head by a baseball as the Angels took infield practice between innings, forcing the All-Star second baseman to leave the game. In the top of the seventh inning, the Seattle Mariners were in the dugout preparing to come up to bat and Cano was on the top railing as the final out of the previous inning. It was then that the injury took place.
As Angels first baseman Albert Pujols was throwing the ball around for infield practice, an errant throw sailed over his head and into the Mariners’ dugout. Cano, who didn’t see the ball coming, took it off the left side of his temple. Pujols was immediately dismayed, throwing his glove to the ground, and the trainers came over to examine Cano. It didn’t seem like Cano lost consciousness during the ordeal, but the Mariners immediately pulled him out of the game.
It has been a really rough season for Robinson Cano and the Seattle Mariners, so this injury almost seems to be piling it on for the team. Coming into this game, Cano had a.246 batting average, four home runs, and 24 RBIs on the season. Not exactly the numbers that the team or its fans want to see from a guy making $24 million a year, but recently it has looked like he was about to emerge from that slump. It was quite the coincidence that the announcers for the Mariners-Angels game were talking about just that half an inning before he got hit with the baseball.
Willie Bloomquist replaced Cano on the field when the Mariners were done hitting, showing just how careful the team wanted to approach this injury. Anything that involves a head injury has to be taken very seriously, especially when it involves a hard-thrown baseball. With no warning that the ball was coming, Cano didn’t even have an opportunity to flinch or deflect the blow from his left temple. While the Mariners also haven’t announced anything, it shouldn’t surprise fans if he ends up missing a few days.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Cano is one season removed from being in the conversation for the American League MVP. Now the Seattle Mariners could be without his services for a few days as he tries to recover from this head injury. More news about Robinson Cano will likely come later in the evening when an official statement is given by the team.
An update has come in from the team after Cano underwent the MLB concussion protocol. The team states that there is no concussion, but that Cano is suffering from a head contusion. Robinson Cano will be listed as day-to-day, but is likely not playing for the next few games for the Mariners.
