Much speculation has arisen following the death of Jon Snow in the Season 5 finale of Game of Thrones . With so many twists and turns occurring in the finale, some of which have led fans to believe that Snow hadn’t actually died, director David Nutter recently sat down with Variety and discussed the finale in detail.
In regards to how he decided to approach such a diverse and impactful episode, Nutter admitted that he had plenty of fear at the start.
“My first reaction is complete and utter fear. How am I going to basically do this? How am I going to direct this?.. I always try to remember that pyramids are built one stone at a time so I try not to freak out too much. I try to hammer it down to how to make it doable.”
Although Nutter revealed that Cersei’s walk was probably the hardest scene to film, he stated that Snow’s death was particularly difficult considering the amount of time the character has been with the show.
“Very difficult. As when we shot the Red Wedding, the death of Robb and Catelyn Stark, these are people you spend years with and these people become your family. Kit Harington is just a great guy and Kit was sad to leave the crew. It’s an emotional feeling as well. But I felt it was important to set up the sequence as quickly as possible so you didn’t expect it or wait for it. I didn’t want it to linger. I wanted it to catch you by surprise. I think in how David (Benioff) and Dan (Weiss) wrote it and how I decided to shoot and how our editor cut it, it was something it was quite powerful and stunning and surprising to great effect.”
While Snow’s death was a major turning point in the Game of Thrones Season 5 finale, many fans were unwilling to believe that he died. In regards to those rumors, Nutter set the record straight, at least for now.
“I can say emphatically that Jon Snow is definitely dead… I keep hearing that phrase in my head, ‘Ding dong, the witch is dead.’ After what you saw there, I think there’s no more clear picture whether he is dead or not.”
Meanwhile, apart from finale news, cast members of Game of Thrones are set to make an appearance at this year’s Comic-Con event, according to Entertainment Weekly . The event, which is set to be moderated by Seth Myers, will feature a number of cast members, including Alfie Allen, John Bradley, Gwendoline Christie, Liam Cunningham, Natalie Dormer, Conleth Hill, Hannah Murray, Sophie Turner, Carice van Houten, and Maisie Williams.
Season 6 of Game of Thrones will premiere in the spring of 2016.
