An unnamed man and woman were shocked to find two strangers in the man’s backyard. The owner of the house yelled at the men to get lost, only later learning both men were escaped killers who had been convicted of violent murders.
According to the Huffington Post , David Sweat and Richard Matt had escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility last week and have been on the run ever since. A previous report from the Inquisitr covered the possible explanation of their escape–a married prison employee named Joyce Mitchell who had links to both men. After breaking out of the facility, the escaped killers used power tools to carve their way into a steam tunnel and out through a manhole cover. The convicts used a black guitar case to transport the power tools they used to break free, according to the New York Daily News.
The two friends, who remain unidentified for their own safety, spotted the escaped killers carrying that same guitar case. Sweat and Matt ended up in the yard in a town called Dannemora in northern New York.
According to ABC News , the friends claim they are “lucky to be alive” after the run-in with the escaped killers, especially since the man did not ask them to get off his lawn politely.
“What the hell are you doing in my yard? Get the hell out of here!” he yelled to the murderers.
Despite the harsh tone, one of the escaped killers responded passively, “We’re just lost. We don’t know where we are. We’re on the wrong street.”
Sweat and Matt then took off running. The two friends later learned that both men were convicted killers and contacted the police immediately.
Both of the escaped killers had terrifying criminal pasts. David Sweat had been sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering a sheriff’s deputy. And his accomplice, Richard Matt, was convicted for kidnapping, killing and mutilating the body of his former boss. The chief of detectives on Matt’s case, Gabriel DiBernardo, described him as “the most vicious, evil person I’ve ever come across in 38 years as a police officer.”
It’s easy to see why the two friends are counting their blessings, having just screamed at two escaped killers who might have turned their violent tendencies against them.
Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is offering $100,000 to anyone with information leading to their capture, reportedly said “These are dangerous men. [They are] capable of committing grave crimes once again.”
