The Law and Order: Special Victims Unit Season 16 finale airs Wednesday night on NBC, and fans are not going to want to miss this one. Sergeant Olivia Benson is close to making her family with foster child Noah permanent, but there are complications ahead. What Law and Order: SVU spoilers are available for the May 20 finale? Has NBC renewed or canceled the show for another season?

Mariska Hargitay teases that there are multiple deaths ahead and that this finale will be very compelling. Hargitay chatted with E! Online and revealed Law and Order: SVU spoilers that the multiple deaths coming Wednesday night will change the course of everybody’s lives.

The situation heading into this Season 16 finale is that Noah’s birth father comes back into the picture and is aiming to regain custody of the little boy. Of course, it seems a stretch to think he’ll be successful, given the charges he’s facing regarding assault, kidnapping, rape and so forth. This episode is titled “Surrendering Noah,” and Noah’s adoption becomes tied to the trial of his biological father.

While the Law and Order: SVU spoilers tease that the social worker says she’s recommending that Olivia be able to move forward and formally adopt Noah, things may not be that easy. The preview also shows Noah’s biological father Johnny D. in court and flipping out. Johnny D. manages to grab a hostage and a gun and shots are fired.

Will anybody key be shot? It’s a crowded courtroom, so it may well be that the multiple deaths are non-essential bystanders. However, TV Guide teases, one squad member will be shot. Who will it be? Many examining the previews shot-by-shot feel certain that it’ll be Nick Amaro, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he dies.

Executive producer Warren Leight teases that it may be difficult to convict Johnny D., and the problems in court may impact Olivia’s ability to move forward with Noah’s adoption. However, most would bank that Johnny D. will be done and gone by the time this episode is over and Olivia and Noah will get to stay together.

Regardless of exactly what happens, it seems that viewers will want to have their tissues handy. Apparently Hargitay herself cried multiple times when viewing the finale and felt that it’s the best season ending they’ve ever had. As fans know, Mariska and her husband Peter Hermann have adopted two children themselves, so surely this storyline hits home to an extent for her with Noah’s adoption.

Will fans be left hanging at the end of the Season 16 finale? Those with the show have indicated to E! Online that there is indeed a cliffhanger ahead . There are high stakes, fireworks, and gasps on the way and it’s clear that fans will want to ensure they catch every moment. There have been some wild episodes already this season, but it sounds as if this one may be one of the most difficult of the entire series.

Luckily, fans won’t be left hanging forever with this one. As TVLine previously reported, NBC has renewed Law and Order: SVU for Season 17. In fact, the show got a fairly early renewal compared to many shows, with The Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Grimm all getting the good news this past February.

Will Season 17 be starting off with the team recovering from a brutal tragedy and the loss of one or more team members? Fans will have to tune in to the Season 16 finale of Law and Order: SVU, airing on NBC on Wednesday, May 20, to find out, then stay tuned for spoilers as the new season comes together.
