Kuwait – Kazakh athletes were furious with a Kuwaiti sporting event after a mistake with the National Anthem. Instead of paying the Kazakh nation anthem, they played the spoof anthem from the movie Borat.
Mariya Dmitriyenko won a gold medal in the 75 target event at the 10th Arab Shooting Championship in Kuwait, When she stood and placed her hand over her heart and prepared to hear her countries national anthem (which is called My Kazakhstan) she was forced to stand there listening to a song that made fun of her country.
According to Radio Free Europe, other Kazakh athlete’s ran up to the radio booth and asked them to stop playing the song but the broadcasters told them this was the song the event had given them to play. The Kazakh team demanded an apology. The award ceremony had to be reshot.
The song was the theme song of Sasha Baron Cohen’s spoof movie, “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”. At the time of its release the move was hated in Kazakhstan for it portrayal of the country as a land of country bumpkins.
Among other insults the spoof song praises the country for having the cleanest prostitutes on the region and for having great potassium exports.
This wasn’t the first time Kazakhstan had a Anthem Malfunction. At a domestically hosted competition, Ricky Martin’s song Living La Vida Loca boomed out of the loudspeakers in stead of the Kazakh National Anthem.
Do you think this Borat mix-up is hilarious or a serious insult?
