An emergency dispatcher responded to a heartbreaking 911 call earlier this week. The man on the other line of the call was Clarence Blackmon, an 81-year-old cancer patient who just wanted something to eat.
Clarence spent months in the hospital being treated and rehabilitated after his cancer diagnosis. When he was finally able to leave the hospital, he came home to an empty refrigerator. With literally nothing to eat, hungry and desperate, Blackmon, who only weighs 115 pounds, decided to call for help.
Marilyn Hinson answered his call.
“What I need is someone to go the grocery store and bring me some food because I need to eat something, he told Hinson. “Whatever you can do to help. I can’t do anything. I can’t go anywhere. I can’t get out of my … chair.”
Hinson knew she had to do something to help, so with her supervisor’s permission and the help of police, she personally brought him some groceries. His request was simple , he wanted a head of cabbage, some cans of beans and beets, some popcorn, tomato juice, and soft drinks, according to ABC11 .
“He was hungry,” Hinson said. “I’ve been hungry. A lot of people can’t say that, but I can, and I can’t stand for anyone to be hungry.” She made Blackmon a sandwich, which he referred to as a “feast,” and then made him several more for later on.
Blackmon called Hinson’s generosity a “blessing.”
“It was like a little miracle ringing in my ear,” he said , according to Fox31 . “I thought, ‘Jesus, you answered those prayers!’”
Blackmon, a veteran with little family living near by, will soon be getting a home health nurse that will regularly check in on him at least twice a week.
