In “ The House That Built Me ,” Miranda Lambert sings about her mom saving pages from Better Homes and Gardens magazine as inspiration for her dream home. The 31-year-old country star is collecting ideas for her own new home now, but her’s are saved on Pinterest.
“We’re building a new house, and I’ve been saving inspiration on Pinterest. A friend of mine recently said, ‘I can see your Pinterest boards, and all you have on there are dog rooms.’ My husband [singer Blake Shelton] and I have 15 rescue animals, and I spend way too much time planning our pets’ spaces. I’m like, okay, I probably need to move on to the laundry room!”
Lambert served as Guest Editor for the June issue of Country Living magazine, and she chatted with them about her ideas on today’s country style . She says her best work happens when she’s relaxed on her front porch at home in the country.
“I write best when I’m home on my porch with my guitar. There’s something calming about looking out at wide-open spaces and trees as far as you can see. The country is perfect for letting your mind drift to a creative place.”
Miranda feels country style, just like country music, reflects real life, celebrating the rough edges and imperfections. Just like the modest house she grew up in, love is what really draws people in. She gets much of her decorating inspiration from the Junk Gypsies , saying, “My decorating mantra is ‘What would the Gypsies do?’”
“Growing up, my house was basically condemned when we got it, but my mother was determined to make it awesome. It had mismatched carpet, and the halls were creaky. But those little things that were imperfect were what made it perfect. It’s funny, because I had friends with really nice houses—with pools!—and they always wanted to come to our house. I think our home just had love. I think that’s why country music resonates with so many people. It’s not about being perfect. It’s real.”
The “Little Red Wagon” singer also revealed her hubby Blake Shelton has quite the green-thumb. Lambert shared that her dad taught her to live off the land, and she takes pride in having her own garden now. She admits Blake the expert gardener of the two, but they will be both be reaping the fruits of their labor this summer. They look forward to enjoying their homegrown tomatoes and turning their strawberries into jam. It doesn’t get more country than that.
