When the synopsis of this year’s Big Bang Theory season finale was released, it teased some big relationship changes for Sheldon and Amy, and Leonard and Penny. Now, with the May 7 episode soon approaching, show runner Steven Molaro has revealed more details to the Hollywood Reporter about what’s in store for the group.
Although we know that Sheldon pushes Leonard and Penny to set a wedding date, what was perhaps most surprising about Molaro’s interview is what he revealed about Sheldon and Amy. He reminded readers that the season finale will mark the fifth anniversary of Sheldon and Amy’s first meeting. He also implied that Sheldon’s frustration at Amy’s attempt to push him to go further in the relationship will come to a head in the season finale.
“Sheldon would tell you that he’s already so far out of his comfort zone and that he should be getting awards for this, instead of getting grief for it. You’re not in his brain, so, from the outside, it does look glacial. But if you’re the tortoise and moving as fast as you think you can, in your head, you’re running. That’s what it’s like for him. I’m not sure how far he can go before she breaks him.”
When asked what could break Sheldon, Molaro responded by plugging the finale.
“You should really watch this one because it’s huge.”
As for Shamy and Leonard and Penny, Molaro said they “make some huge, life-changing decisions.”
Molaro also said that the episode is a cliffhanger that nicely sets up Season 9. He said it’s too soon to say whether or not The Big Bang Theory will continue after Season 10, which is its current scheduled run.
Despite the small moves forward for Sheldon and Amy this season, including using the words “I love you,” and having a sleepover in a fort, Amy has continued to express frustration at her affection-challenged boyfriend. In a scene from last season, Amy lost it, for a second, when Sheldon’s obsession with his video game system distracted from their dinner together. Earlier this year, Jim Parsons told TV Guide he thought Sheldon and Amy’s relationship, based on a contract, was “absurd but at its own level, is the most honest amount of communication I have seen from a couple on TV or film in many years.”
Molaro also said Raj will make a decision about his own love life, and Howard and Bernadette will continue to adjust to living in Mrs. Wolowitz’s house, with Stuart as their roommate.
The Big Bang Theory airs new episodes Thursday nights at 8 p.m. on CBS.
