The Georgia execution of Kelly Renee Gissendaner, Georgia’s only female on death row, has been delayed for a second time, just before the execution was set to take place.
According to USA Today , the Georgia execution of Kelly Gissendaner was postponed Monday night because of a problem with the drug that was to be used for the lethal injection. That drug was pentobarbital.
Officials claimed that the drug has a cloudy appearance, and according to Georgia Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gwendolyn Hogan, they called a pharmacist and then “out of an abundance of caution,” decided to postpone the execution.
According to CNN , Hogan has released a statement on behalf of the Georgia Department of Correction regarding the postponement of Gissendaner’s execution.
“Prior to the execution, the drugs were sent to an independent lab for testing of potency. The drugs fell within the acceptable testing limits. Within the hours leading up to the scheduled execution, the Execution Team performed the necessary checks. At that time, the drugs appeared cloudy. The Department of Corrections immediately consulted with a pharmacist, and in an abundance of caution, Inmate Gissendaner’s execution has been postponed.”
This is not the first time that Gissendaner’s execution has been postponed. According to a previous report by the Inquisitr , her original execution date had been set for February 25 of this year. While the latest postponement was due to concerns with the lethal injection drug, last month, Gissendaner’s execution was postponed due to weather concerns and scheduling conflicts.
Gissendaner has applied for clemency twice, and both times her applications have been denied despite powerful statements from not only herself, but from other inmates and even prison staff.
“There are no excuses for what I did,” Ms. Gissendaner said in a statement that was included in her clemency application. “I am fully responsible for my role in my husband’s murder. I had become so self-centered and bitter about my life and who I had become, that I lost all judgment.”
According to the New York Times , Gissendaner went on to say that she has since learned to place her hope in the God she now knows.
No date has been set to reschedule the Georgia execution of Kelly Gissendaner. In fact, according to the New York Times , the execution has been postponed indefinitely.
