Letroy Guion of the Green Bay Packers was arrested on Tuesday in Starke, Florida, on two felony charges after police discovered a 9mm semiautomatic handgun, over $190,000 in cash, and 357 grams of cannabis in a traffic stop.
The arrest, which took place at approximately 11:03 p.m. EST, came after police pulled the Packers nose tackle over for failure to maintain a single lane and an officer smelled a strong odor of weed emanating from his truck, according to the local police department’s arrest report.
A Packers spokesman was quoted by the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel as having said that they were “ aware of a serious matter ” but had “not yet spoken to Letroy” and subsequently had “no further comment.”
We are aware of a serious matter involving Letroy Guion […] We have not yet spoken to Letroy, and we will have no further comment.
After he was pulled over while driving his truck, a 2015 Dodge Ram, he asked the officer whether he knew who he was. Due to his behavior and the strong odor, the officer had the 315-pound professional athlete step out of the vehicle and called for backup.
The officer asked him if he had anything illegal in the vehicle, to which Guion responded, telling the officer that he had a registered firearm in the vehicle. Carrying a registered gun is legal in the state of Florida, however, it’s illegal to carry a gun alongside illegal drugs.
While the officer was searching the vehicle after having secured the firearm, the NFL player became “extremely uncooperative and hostile” and “kept coming towards the vehicle several times saying, ‘Hey man, my money is in there. Don’t let him take my money,’” according to the Starke Police Department’s arrest report. The report also indicated that he “rushed” towards the driver’s side of the truck in a failed attempt to retrieve the black bag located on the front passenger side. After attempting to take the bag, he was placed in handcuffs.
Inside of the black bag, authorities discovered two bags of marijuana containing 357 grams, less than a pound. At which point, Guion was placed under arrest.
The middle pocket of the bag contained a total of $190,028.81 according to authorities.
Starke law enforcement seized everything and towed the vehicle.
Paul Imig with FOX Sports Wisconsin tweeted to his more than 6,200 followers an image which he indicated was Letroy’s “mug shot” from his recent hometown arrest.
Letroy, who played for the Minnesota Vikings from 2008 until 2013, was born in Starke, the same Florida city in which he was recently arrested.
After being booked on felony charges in Bradford County Jail on Tuesday night, Guion was released Wednesday afternoon on a $100,000 bond. The Brandford County Sheriff’s website indicated that he was released at 2:27 p.m. after having spent over 14 hours in jail.
What do you think he was doing with that much cash and weed in the same place at the same time?
