Is Prince Harry getting a “wink” of approval from his father through a Christmas card?
Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, sent out a customary holiday card this season, with a nice picture of the couple and a non-controversial greeting. But the editors at People took a second glance at the photo, and concluded it might be a “tip of the hat” to Charles’ younger son, Prince Harry.
People notes that the shot of Charles and Camilla , with the pair smiling broadly and applauding, was taken at the opening ceremonies of the Invictus Games. The Invictus Games was an initiative of Prince Harry’s that created a sport competition forum for wounded servicemen and women. People had also revealed earlier in the year that Harry himself was inspired by the Warrior Games in the U.S.
“It was such a great concept by America that it had to be stolen. But I wanted to bring it to a broader international audience… [The Warrior Games showed] firsthand the power of sport in inspiring recovery and demonstrating life beyond disability.”
Prince Harry was personally involved in the organization of the Invictus Games. The event was spread over four days in September and hosted more than 400 athletes from 13 countries in nine sports. There are plans to continue the games in upcoming years.
The revelation of Prince Charles’ holiday card comes as BBC Sports announces that all participants of the Invictus Games will receive the Helen Rollason Award on Sunday. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in the face of adversity, and is named in honor of a BBC presenter who passed away in 1999.
Prince Harry will present the award and Dave Henson, captain of the U.K. team, will accept on behalf of all who competed. The event will see 30 competitors introduced on stage as part of the BBC Sports Personality show, in front of an audience of 12,000 at an arena in Glasgow.
Prince Harry’s older brother, Prince William, also attended the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games in September, although the Duchess of Cambridge had to stay away due to an illness associated with her pregnancy. While Prince Harry honors those who participated in the Invictus Games, his brother and sister-in-law have released the official Christmas pictures of Harry’s nephew, Prince George .
As the younger royal, Prince Harry’s official duties sometimes fall under the radar. While much news was made as the result of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s trip to New York last week, Prince Harry’s trip to the U.S. last year was quieter. The Prince visited five U.S. cities in seven days, choosing to focus on military charities and a landmine organization that was important to his mother, Princess Diana.
