Ed Sheeran is one of the biggest acts on the world’s music scene right now. He has admitted that his music has been streamed 860 million times on Spotify and even walked away with the title for the Best British Artist of 2014 at the inaugural BBC Music Awards held in London recently.
To date, his second album, X, has sold over 1 million copies. He has had a successful 2014 (and a few Grammy nominations in the mix).
Yet Ed Sheeran thinks Sam Smith is a better singer than him — at least for the James Bond theme song that is. According to the Independent, the “Thinking Out Loud” singer was speaking backstage before the BBC Music Awards , about why he would be not be the perfect artist to record the theme tune for Spectre, the latest installment in the James Bond franchise.
“I am a James Bond fan but I think the theme tune should be ballsy and I feel like if I was going to do it, it would sound a bit wet,” he said.
Ed Sheeran then invested a wealth of confidence in a fellow British act, the sultry “Stay With Me” singer, Sam Smith.
“I think Sam Smith would be perfect suited up with his strong voice. I’m backing Sam. Anyone from him to Paloma Faith who does the retro thing really f**king well should do it. I’d love to but I just wasn’t born with the James Bond voice. You never know, I’m not ruling it out, maybe in ten years time when my balls drop.”
Sheeran, who recorded the theme song “I See Fire” for the hit movie The Hobbit, says he just doesn’t have the type of voice that would make a James Bond theme song a hit.
“ The Hobbit song was perfect for me to do as it’s folky and guitar-driven — a hairy short man should be singing that kind of song!”
Spectre, which is set to be released in theaters next November, is the 24th installment in the James Bond franchise. According to Variety, shooting will begin in the Italian city of Rome in February next year and is expected to bring roughly Euros 50 million ($62 million) to Rome.
“The sum, reported by Rome daily La Repubblica , will go for complicated car chases, parachute drops and helicopter scenes, set in different parts of the Eternal City,” Variety reported.
Recently, hacked Sony emails revealed that Spectre is taking more than $300 million to produce. With Ed Sheeran distancing himself from the theme song, will he be missing out on whatever profits the highly anticipated film is expected to make?
