Sony’s struggles with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and future movies set in the Spiderverse have become a bit of a sticking point for the film publisher. At the same time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe featuring The Avengers , Captain America , Thor , and Guardians of the Galaxy seemingly has no ceiling on the box office possibilities. It may be no wonder then that Sony is talking with Marvel Studios about bringing the web-crawler into a much bigger universe.
According to a rumor with HitFix , Sony and Marvel Studios are currently negotiating to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This is huge, but potentially means either an all-new reboot for Peter Parker or just introducing him to the MCU without an origin story.
“While I can’t get the confirmations I need to verify the story, I’m hearing that there are some very cool “Spider-Man” plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom’s minds. Will it work out? I don’t know. I would love to be able to state for sure that it’s happening. What seems clear from what I’ve heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again.”
This comes at the same time that negotiations between Marvel and Fox over the X-Men and Fantastic Four are seemingly deteriorating right before everyone’s eyes. Marvel announced the final issue of the Fantastic Four comic book conveniently timed for just prior to the release of the Fantastic Four movie reboot via Bleeding Cool .
At the same time, the X-Men comic universe is in a serious state of upheaval with the Death of Wolverine event, plus plenty of other changes. Meanwhile, the Inhumans received their own comic series and an expanded roster of super-powered heroes and villains. It’s something I covered previously for The Inquisitr and helps to explain why there is little to no marketing or licensing support from Marvel for the Fox run films.
Regardless of the situation with Fox, Sony working with Marvel to bring Spider-Man into the MCU may be the last, best hope for the franchise. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 ‘s release date was bumped from 2016 to unknown while a Sinister Six movie was shoved into production with a tepid response from the fan base.
What do you think of Spider-Man joining the MCU? Should it happen or should it definitely happen yesterday? Let us know in the comments below.
