WWE has given us some memorable teams and factions over the years, some that are Hall of Fame worthy on their own. The interesting issue WWE faced was that since the PG era started, it seemed they could not come up with a dominate faction the likes of which we have seen in the Attitude or Ruthless Aggression Era. That was until November of 2012 when The Shield debuted at Survivor Series .
The Shield ended up dominating the entire WWE roster where they capped off their run at the top by beating legendary faction Evolution. not once but twice. The team was going strong into June of 2014, basically telling the world that together they were unstoppable. Then, Seth Rollins of The Shield turned on his brothers Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. This sent shockwaves through the WWE that was on par with The Rockers ending or Hulk Hogan joining the NWO. No one wanted to see The Shield disband seemingly, despite the fact that we knew it had to happen eventually.
Rollins took the chance that Triple H and The Authority gave him, and eventually capitalized. He captured the Money in the Bank briefcase at the Money in the Bank PPV, giving him a shot at a World Title any time he wants for up to a year.
The issue is, he is in a rivalry with Dean Ambrose who holds grudges and wants to literally annihilate Rollins. That means any time Seth wants to cash in, Ambrose will be present. Reigns is moving on to bigger fish, and will be a star in his own right as a singles star.
However, what would happen if The Shield formed back up once again? It seems that WWE is considering the idea, due to the massive success they had with them the last few years. According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter , WWE is planning to use The Shield similar to DX where they will team back up every once in a while…potentially every few years. It would only be for a short time, but it would be due to need storyline wise just like it was for DX and even Evolution.
While there are no storylines currently for The Shield as a faction, the idea is that WWE might form them back up in late 2015 or early 2016. It might have a lot to do with how all three are doing as singles stars. Clearly Rollins and Ambrose have been singles stars before and can handle it, Reigns had the only question mark. However, he seems to have done well and looks like a potential star for WWE from now into the future. All men will most likely be potentially doing well next year, so something will have to happen that will cause a need for The Shield, but what that is right now is up in the air.
What we do know is that The Shield is planned to come back and WWE is planning to treat them like a top tier faction, as they are certainly one of the Top 10 best in many eyes. While we do not know how they will be used, I think many fans are excited about the fact that we could see them together again.
