The new video game releases for the week of June 22 feel more as if someone unstopped the drain that was holding the release calendar back. With Watch Dogs earning Ubisoft a tidy penny, the game is now safely in the rear view mirror and, as a result, the game release calendar is more crowded. Every platform is getting a game of some sort, even Sony’s PSP is getting a new release this week.
The genre list is varied, ranging from Another World ‘s nostalgic return to the PlayStation platform, sports games like R.B.I. Baseball 14 making its way to next gen consoles, and the Ubisoft game that caused more than a few sniffles at E3 with its trailer alone, Valiant Hearts .
Valiant Hearts is probably the surprise game of the week, as it received an enormous amount of good will from the gaming press. Of all the new video game releases for the week, none are tackling the horrors of war in the cartoon animated feel that is Valiant Hearts. The puzzle adventure game is being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and is using the same UbiArt Framework that has powered the Rayman Origins , Rayman Legends and Child of Light games. Even though the game has a hand-drawn comic book art style it has a serious undercurrent. “It’s a game about war,” director Yoan Fanise told Polygon. “About humans during war.”
We have included the stirring trailer from E3 at the end of this post.
Another World is a new release of a 20-year-old game that was titled Out of This World when it was originally released in 1991. The game is a cinematic platformer where the player controls Lester, a scientist who finds himself stranded on an alien world after his experiment is interrupted by a strike of lightning. The game was originally released for the Amiga and Atari ST systems and later given a modern port by its creator Éric Chahi for the game’s 15th anniversary. A 20th anniversary was later made for mobile devices and is now seeing a release on the Sony PlayStation family of consoles.
The new video game release for the PSP game we mentioned earlier is End of Serenity , but avid JRPG fans who have an iOS or Android phone may have already played the game as End of Aspiration which IGN noticed when Natsume announced the release. Citing the surprising success of Mystic Chronicles , Natsume said the game will scratch the same itch of the 16-bit RPG’s that were prevalent in the 90s. The game is not getting a UMD release, but will be available on the PlayStation Store for purchase on the PSP or the PS Vita.
