The long-awaited sequel to the Ghostbusters franchise is finally on the way, a fter a short delay due to the death of Harold Ramis . With Ghostbusters 3 is back in the works, the only question is what characters can we expect to see?
According to The Guardian , one of the integral heroes will be Oscar, the son of Sigourney Weaver’s character in Ghostbusters 2 . Oscar was an infant in the original film but will be all grown up for the third installment and a member of the Ghostbuster team.
In an interview in Vanity Fair , former Ghostbusters actress Sigourney Weaver spoke to the producer of Ghostbusters 3, Ivan Reitman, about the returning series. “I said, I have one condition,” she said. “I want my son Oscar to be a Ghostbuster, and he said, ‘We’ve already done that.’”
The movie will feature a new cast of ghostbusters, sporting the spirit-exterminating equipment to vanquish evil from New York City. There is no word yet about who will be part of the ghostbuster crew besides Oscar.
Sigourney Weaver played Dana Barrett, the mother of baby Oscar in Ghostbusters 2, and she is expected to reprise her role in the upcoming film. Dan Akroyd, who played Ray Stantz in the original two films and created the concept of Ghostbusters, will also be returning. Supporting actors Rick Moranis and Ernie Hudson have also expressed interest in appearing in Ghostbusters 3 .
Digital Spy reported that both Hudson and Moranis commented on the future of their characters. Moranis’ character Louis Tully is “in prison, a cellmate of Bernie Madoff’s. They compete to see who can make their bed first in the morning.” Whereas Hudson’s character Winston Zeddemore might be “the CEO of the Ghostbusters franchise. I just hope that he wouldn’t be on a walker or a wheelchair.”
Sony will be shooting Ghostbusters 3 starting in March of 2015 in New York. The film will be written by Etan Cohen ( Tropic Thunder, Men in Black 3 ) with help from Dan Akroyd. Ivan Reitman claimed he wouldn’t be directing the film after the death of Harold Ramis, who co-wrote the original Ghostbusters films and played Egon Spengler. Ramis died this past February at the age of 69 .
The last remaining star of the original Ghostbusters films, Bill Murray, is so far refusing to reunite with the cast of Ghostbusters 3 to reprise his role as Peter Venkman. Writer Etan Cohen commented on Murray’s absence from the film: “Absolutely everyone wants Bill Murray. But everyone has great faith in the franchise.”
