Time can’t go fast enough for Revenge season 4 to get here, but a few spoilers for storylines have arried. Calling into Entertainment Weekly , showrunner Sunil Nayar describes how the season 3 finale set the stage for what’s next. In the finale,Victoria was committed after Emily learned she was the one who murdered Aiden. Viewers got the shock of their Revenge lives when David Clarke appeared at the end… killing Conrad.
Nayar’s objective is to mix things up in season 4 and prepare to go another direction:
“One of the ideas was to reboot [the show], and one of the ideas was to really just kind of boot it in the a**, and I think we did both things really well.”
Writers are working on new angles for the Revenge characters right now. David Clarke is the “game changer” in season 4. Victoria becomes darker in her ways (not that it can get much worse), and Emily’s anger about Aiden’s death will ratchet her vengeance to a whole different level. In an interview with E! Online , Nayar shares the twist in bringing David back alive :
“He is, of anybody that can come walking into the Hamptons, he is the game changer and we felt the best way to bring him back to the Hamptons is when we reintroduce him, you realize this man is no longer about forgiveness, that revenge has become a part of his makeup. So that the man that both Emily and Victoria think they knew isn’t the guy at all. Whether people love it or hate it, I’m sure it’s going to be a polarizing decision, there’s nobody who’s not going to want to know where he’s been and what he’s about, so we can’t wait to tell those stories next season.”
In describing Emily’s aim for revenge, Nayar says the way she’ll go about seeking it in a more “mature” way in season 4:
“We thought the best thing to do is make her understand what revenge is in a very different way. It’s one thing when you are a young girl and you lose your father and you have this idealistic sense of who he was and therefore you might idealize the sense of what you have to do to get him justice, but when you lose the man that you love, the love of your life with whom you plan on spending your life at the hand of the woman you hate more than anybody, it’s a much more mature kind of anger that I think will inform how Emily will go about doing what she does in season four differently.”
How will Emily react to learning that her father is still alive and is not the same man she remembers when she was a little girl? Fans are already a step ahead of her in terms of knowing what kind of man he is. After all, he killed Conrad Grayson in the season 3 finale. True, no one could blame him; he just had a look of arriving at the Hamptons for bad reasons at the same time.
Victoria eventually gets released and will be on a warpath with Emily — whom she’s well aware is Amanda Clarke. Season 4 spoilers have indicated it’s just a matter of time when she’s discharged from the mental institution and is even more fierce in her quest to destroy Emily/Amanda.
Actress Emily VanCamp , who portrays Emily, perhaps has one of the juiciest roles on television with the range of emotions she often expresses in a show with endless twists and turns.
Revenge season 4 premieres this fall on ABC and airs Sundays at 10 pm, ET/PT.
