With a 58-35 record the Philadelphia Phillies sit in first place in the National League East. What is more impressive is they have already played 44 games against their four divisional opponents and have a 28-16 record there. If they can beat up on their non-divisional foes in the second half this team seems to be a virtual lock for the post season. Of course they went just 9-6 in inter league play so this is a team that can be beat, but one that is playing very well.
The Phillies offense has scored 393 hits, on 790 hits. Both of those numbers are near the bottom half of the 16 senior circuit clubs. As a team they are hitting just .249, and that is 10th in their league. Phillies hitters have struck out 572 times, and that is the lowest amount in the NL so this team puts the ball in play. They have also drawn 303 walks, which is fifth best in the NL. They have hit 79 home runs, so this team could use a little power if they make a trade deadline move.
The Phillies pitching staff has given up 308 runs on 761 hits. Those numbers are both in the top third of the 16 NL teams. The staff ERA is 3.10 and that is the best staff ERA in their league. Phillies pitchers have struck out 721 hitters, and issued 236 walks. They already have two starters with 11 wins, and for the most part the bullpen has been fairly good. They could use a little help there as Danys Baez has an ERA of over 6.00.
