The Duggars have consulted a fertility expert, as they “would love” to have more children. Jim Bob, Michelle, and their 19 children are featured in the reality program 19 Kids and Counting . Although Michelle suffered a miscarriage in 2011, she and her husband are ready to try for their 20th child.
As Michelle is 47 years old, a pregnancy would be considered high risk. Complications could include birth defects or another miscarriage. A pregnancy could also prove detrimental to Michelle’s health because she previously suffered from preeclampsia.
In addition to threatening Michelle’s life, the preeclampsia forced the early birth of the Duggars’ youngest daughter — Josie. Although she is now healthy, Josie was born more nearly four months premature.
Despite the expected risks, the Duggars are exploring the possibility of having another child. Although they do not use birth control, Michelle has not been pregnant since 2011. As it is unlikely that they will conceive naturally, the Duggars have consulted a fertility specialist.
As reported by Today , the couple met with Dr. Paul Wendel to discuss their options. Dr. Wendel explained that pregnancy, at the age of 47, carries numerous risks. In addition to risking her own health, the Duggar’s child would have a higher risk of being born with Down Syndrome.
Michelle acknowledges the possible risks. However, she said she is willing to do what is necessary to “be ready to catch a baby if God saw fit to give [them] one.”
The Duggars have always said that it is “up to God” to determine how many children they will have. Although she and her husband “would love” to have more children, Michelle said she is prepared to accept the doctor’s recommendations:
“If I am in that season of life where we’re not able to have any more, then I’m fine, I ‘m happy with that.”
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar were married in 1984. Following the birth of their first child, the Duggars made a conscious decision to stop using birth control. As fundamental Christians, they are pro-choice and believe birth control is selfish and dangerous.
In a period of 26 years, Michelle gave birth to 10 boys and nine girls . Although they have been criticized for their religious beliefs, and their failure to use birth control, the Duggars have strongly defended their lifestyle.
The Duggars will certainly face increased criticism for consulting a fertility expert. However, they would happily welcome a 20th child into their household.
