In case you haven’t been paying attention, what looked like it was going to be easy street to the conference finals for Sidney Crosby and Co. has suddenly become an interesting Penguins vs. Rangers series – a series that heads back to New York for game 6.

The safe money is still on the Penguins to finish out the series, either tonight or in a game 7 in Pittsburgh, but this is the Stanley Cup playoffs and history has proven time and again that safe bets are never safe. There’s nothing like a team playing for its life and the New York Rangers are playing like a team with its back against the wall and something to prove. Look for an exciting finish in the Metropolitan Division series.

The New York Rangers thought they would have to play game 5 – and possibly game 6 – without 30-goal scoring right winger Martin St. Louis, whose mother died unexpectedly. St. Louis spent Thursday with his family in Montreal, but felt that his mother – France – would want him to be on the ice with his teammates. According to a Yahoo! Sports report , St. Louis had this to say about it after the game:

“I’m glad we’re able to get this win and stay alive. She was a great lady, the best human being I’ve ever known in my life. I owed it to her to do it. I know she would have wanted me to play. She was with me the whole way but this is probably the most comfortable place you can be as a hockey player.”

On the other side of the ice, according to a Yahoo! Sports report , Penguins star Sidney Crosby had strong words about his team’s effort in game 5 of the Rangers vs. Penguins series:

“I don’t think there’s much good to take from it to be honest with you. So I think we have to make sure we come with the right mindset going to New York. Whatever mindset we were tonight it wasn’t enough.”

Defenseman Rob Scuderi echoed the same sentiment:

“At the start (of game 5) I think we played like a team that looked like we had an automatic bid to the next round. When it’s 2-0 right off the bat and you’re playing from behind it’s not easy.”
