The Virginia Destroyers secured a high profile talent for their 2011 season when they singed former Miami Dolphin Pat White. White is a double whammy signing for the upstart league as the Destroyers get a high profile guy that will help bring in the interest of the press, but the Destroyers get a player who went to College at the University of West Virginia to help attract the local football fans. On the football field, the Destroyers get a guy who could be a change of pace QB, or maybe we will see the Wild Cat come to the UFL.
One thing is for sure Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer has plenty of experience dealing with unconventional QB’s, as his 1980’s Cleveland Browns teams featured Bernie Kosar at QB. His challenge now is to design an offense that can maximize White’s special talent. Since they already have Chris Greisen on the roster I do not think White will start, but will have to find some other role to play on this team.
White is a talented guy, but he is one of these guys that played in the spread offense in college, and may be a run first kind of QB. That didn’t gel in the NFL where teams want their QB’s to be more of the pocket passer type. However, in the UFL, teams are a little freer to try new and exciting things and maybe this is where White gets a real chance to show all of us what he can do.
