‘Incredibles 2’ Versus ‘Big Hero 6’: Which Disney Superhero Movie Will Prevail?

Disney has been really busy announcing or promoting their upcoming films. With the success of Frozen starting to dwindle down due to its age, it is apparent Disney will need to move on to their next projects. However, it seems Disney is sticking to one singular theme: superheroes. In that case, is Disney going to be the ones to shoot their own ratings?

This comes on the heels of Disney’s two big superhero movie announcements. The first is when Disney announced that Incredibles 2 are now in the works . Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, announced this on March 18, 2014. The long-awaited sequel is coming a decade after the release of its 2004 predecessor. The film was such a success, it earned Pixar $691 million at the box office, making it the fifth highest grossing Pixar film to date. It also won two Oscars at the Academy Awards back in 2005.

However, there is another superhero movie Disney announced earlier. Back in 2013, details for the movie after Disney’s Frozen were shown, and it’s from Marvel. Big Hero 6 is the first Disney Animated Classic in which Disney Animation Studios will team up with with Marvel. Not taking into account that the comic the movie is based off of is kind of obscure to the common mantra of Marvel comics ( X-Men , Avengers , Spider-Man , etc.), the movie is already getting a lot of hype because of its simple presentation trailer, highlighting how beautiful the setting of the new Disney movie will be.

Now that two Disney movies of the same genre have been announced, a unique question has been presented: Which Disney superhero movie will prevail? Unfortunately, this cannot be answered by looking at what both movies have to offer. As of now, very little is known about Incredibles 2 and Big Hero 6 . True there are some interesting theories about both of them, especially one that Jack-Jack will be the villain in Incredibles 2 , but they are still theories.

The best way to possibly predict which Disney superhero movie will prevail is by looking back at the track record of previous movies from both Pixar and Disney Animation Studios. Box Office Mojo will suffice for this predictive analysis.

Let’s start with Pixar . According to the picture above, the only movie on the list by them is Toy Story 3 . The movie was even in the top ten when it first debuted. However, Disney purchased Pixar back in 2006, meaning Toy Story 3 is technically a Disney-Pixar film. If we go solely by a film developed by Pixar, before merging into Disney, then the first true Pixar film on the list is at the 26th position with Finding Nemo .

Pertaining to Disney Animation Studios , Frozen is at the bottom of the top ten. However, this is the first time, in the studio’s history, one of their movies passed the $1 billion mark and broke the top ten. The fact it took Disney Animation Studios fifty-three films to accomplish this says much. However, Big Hero 6 is being partnered with Marvel and according to the box office, one of their movies holds the 3rd spot in the top ten. Combining the efforts of both studios, that made the 3rd and 10th best films at the box office, is a partnership sure to produce favorable results.

In the end, Disney and the fans will win. For starters, Big Hero 6 is expected to release in November. Incredibles 2 will release either next year, or the year after. So which Disney superhero film will prevail? If both are good for Disney and fans, does it matter?
