Kate Winslet takes a significant turn to the dark side in her starring role in the sci-fi thriller, Divergent. Fans have been eagerly crossing off the days until this movie hits the theaters on March 21. The 60 second trailer is the second to be released, and features Winslett and her co-star, Shailene Woodley.
Divergent is based in a futuristic Chicago where people are tested when they are young and subsequently divided into five factions based on their personalities and virtues. Each represents a different virtue, and teenagers have to decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another.
In the clip, you see Winslett, Woodley, and Theo James trying to find their rightful place in the futuristic world amid a string of action sequences, tense speeches, and cool special effects. Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Woodley) and her handsome instructor Four (James) are part of the brave Dauntless, while Winslet is the faction leader for the intelligent Erudite. But there are also Divergents, like Tris, who don’t fit in anywhere and are viewed as dangerous to the rest of society.
In a chilling and sinister tone, we hear Winslet threaten to exterminate all of the Divergents:
I want every Divergent hunted down and killed. Every single one.
Just a tad different than Winslet’s portrayal of Rose , in Titanic. I don’t think Kate will have much time for romance in this movie. It’s the first time in her award winning career that she’s taken a turn as a villain. While playing a villain in the film, she took on the role of a mentor to the young Woodley off screen. Shailene says that her Divergent co-star gave her some career advice while they were shooting for the film.
People make it harder on themselves than they need to. In life in general, but especially actors. They take themselves too seriously.
Divergent is the first installment of a trilogy written by Veronica Roth. The second novel in the trilogy, Insurgent , was published on May 1, 2012, and the third and final book, Alliegiant , on October 22, 2013. The novel has been compared to similar young adult books such as The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner because of its similar theme and target audience. Roth has said that the idea for the series was born while she was studying in college.
Are you on pins and needles waiting for Divergent to hit the theaters? Will Kate Winslet be an effective villain, as this is her first time in that type of role? Tell us what you think…..
