Kendrick Lamar intends to cover some very dark subjects on his next album.
Everyone is curious to see what the acclaimed rapper has in store for fans following the success of his 2012 album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City . According to Lamar, his upcoming collection of songs will lean towards the darker side of life.
“I love it. Y’all weather’s a bit gloomy right now, I like gloomy weather. I work best and do most of my album under gloomy weather, so you’ll hear a lot of dark tracks in there,” recently told the folks at i-D.Vice
Kendrick Lamar explained last month that he tends to pen songs whenever the urge strikes. It doesn’t matter where he is or what he has to write with at the moment — if a song pops into his mind, then he has to get it out .
“The process now is so spontaneous. It’s whatever I get my hands on. Whenever an idea approaches, I gotta write it down. I gotta keep a mental note,” Lamar said.
The rapper continued, “Whether it’s a napkin, my phone, a book or anything. Inspiration is everything. That’s my main focus, my art, knowing it wasn’t the hype, it wasn’t press, it wasn’t publicity stunts. It was the music from day one. I have to remember that.”
Kendrick also told i-D.Vice that he’d love to get some help from Erykah Badu on his new album. Although he’s definitely down for working with folks in the recording studio, he doesn’t have any specific people lined up right now.
He also dished on working with fellow rapper Drake:
“I went on his Club Paradise tour and we really built a bond, a relationship, since the first time we met. He put me on his album, which was the interlude, [“Buried Alive Interlude”], we always said it was gonna work, it was just about finding the right song, that was the right song.”
While many fans thought Kendrick Lamar would take home the trophy for Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards, the honor ultimately went to Macklemore & Ray Lewis. If Lamar holds any ill will towards his competition, then he kept it under lock and key following the ceremony.
“It’s well deserved; he did what he did, man. He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that’s how it go,” the rapper said.
