The Michael Bay CES 2014 departure yesterday could have been a positive. They say there is no such thing as bad press, and he may have proven it by giving up when he didn’t know what to say.
Michael Bay took the stage yesterday to promote Samsung’s new curved 105 inch display, but as he was promoting the product, the teleprompter malfunctioned. The Transformers director had stammered a bit, trying to come up with something to say. In the end, he embarrassed himself and Samsung by apologizing profusely and stepping off the stage.
Not normally seen in front of the camera, it can’t be said that Micheal Bay didn’t try to overcome what could be stage fright. Michael Bay’s CES 2014 appearance (and abrupt departure) could be good for himself and Samsung, if we really think about it.
Bay is already famous for his live action take on classic cartoons, turning them into visual feasts. Yes, we all know that he is also famous for taking every moment he can to make something explode or show off male and female assets. He is even famous for throwing around sex jokes, something that earned Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen critical disapproval. After yesterday’s scene at CES 2014, Michael Bay may have also shown that he may be camera shy when he can’t think of anything to say.
Samsung is famous in its own right; maybe not for its entertainment properties, but for the quality of its products. Some people won’t buy a new mobile phone or smartphone if Samsung didn’t make it. While other manufacturers make less expensive products by using cheap materials, Samsung repeatedly shows that they expect people to drop and throw things, and makes their products capable of lasting through the abuse.
Let’s just hope Samsung didn’t make the teleprompter .
The infamous CES 2014 incident probably earned Bay and Samsung even more attention. After all, if everything had gone according to plan, would we even have cared about Michael Bay promoting a TV? Most likely we would have moved on to something else and forgotten about the whole thing. Do we even remember anything else about the show, other than Sharp’s 3D glasses free TV?
Now the media will most likely tear into the scene and take what it can from the awkward appearance, trying to sling dirt on Samsung for getting Bay to promote their TV. On the other hand, this could possibly even drive sales of Michael Bay films and Samsung products even higher. Why?
Because we remember the Michael Bay CES 2014 scene.
