2010 NFL Draft one year later: Houston Texans

So a year ago I thought that the Houston Texans reached a bit for Kareem Jackson. I was disappointed they did not use a first round pick on a running back and one year alter it looks like all of the shine of this drat class has fallen away. The Texans had nine picks last year and they landed only one starter in Jackson. Of course Ben Tate went down with an injury and that hurts the initial impact of this class, but this looks to be well under average.

A quick look at the 2010 Texans draft class:

  • Round One- CB Kareem Jackson
  • Round Two- RB Ben Tate
  • Round Three- DT Earl Mitchell
  • Round Four- LB Darryl Sharpton
  • Round Four- TE Garrret Graham
  • Round Five- DB Sherrick McManis
  • Round Six- G Shelly Smith
  • Round Six- KR Trindon Holiday
  • Round Seven- WR Dorin Dickerson

So Jackson started and had two picks, but struggled in coverage. Tate went down with an ankle injury. Mitchell contributed one sack and 28 tackles, and may end up as a nose tackle in Wade Phillips’ revised 3-4 scheme. Sharpton had 34 tackles before an injury. Graham saw limited action in two TE sets. McManis had 13 tackles but was a solid special team’s player. Smith spent the majority of the season on the practice squad. Holiday spent the year on injured reserve, and Dickerson was a regular game day inactive.

So this class still has plenty of upside and I think their two year grade will be a heck of a lot better as these players may get larger roles in a new defensive scheme. We also have to figure Tate winds up as a key backup to Arian Foster. If all of that pans out this class looks a heck of a lot better.
