Orlando Bloom isn’t worried about how fans will react to Legolas’ involvement with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug .
Although the character doesn’t appear in author J.R.R. Tolkien’s book The Hobbit , director Peter Jackson believes Legolas would have been around when Bilbo and his buddies make their way through the wood elves’ neck of the wood. Purists will no doubt have a field day with the changes Jackson and company made to the story.
Fan reaction to this sort of stuff tends to make actors nervous, but Orlando Bloom told Entertainment Weekly that he doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about their opinions. According to the actor, Legolas fits very well into the movie Jackson crafted.
“Of course, the extreme fans are going to have their very strong and strict principles and thoughts on the truth of this world, but you can’t please all the people. Does Legolas fit in this world? Absolutely. Should he be in this world? Why not?” Bloom told the magazine.
The actor also addressed rumors that Legolas and Evangeline Lilly’s Tauriel fall in love at some point during the next installment of The Hobbit . In short: Fans probably shouldn’t sweat it.
Bloom explained:
“Elves are eternal in their thinking and their being, so a love story would almost belittle the idea of what the relationship would be. Their connection is a very deep elven feeling that’s done more done in looks than in words. I always imagined if elves were to make love, they’d probably be tantric lovers. Because if you’re living forever, you’re not in a hurry.”
Although he wasn’t worried about how folks would react to Legolas and The Desolation of Smaug , Orlando Bloom admitted that he was a little concerned about fitting into his old costume. Although the guy is clearly in fantastic shape, it has been 10 years since he portrayed the character on the big screen.
“The first thing I did when I got to New Zealand was try on my old Legolas costume, because I wanted to see if it would still fit. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to don the blonde wig again,” he recently told Movie Fix .
Since it’s impossible to please every single J.R.R. Tolkien fan on the planet, chances are plenty of folks will start bellyaching as soon as The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters. If any of the cast and crew are sweating the details, then it certainly isn’t Orlando Bloom. The flick arrives on December 13.
