New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees threw for five TDs in Sunday’s 35-17 home win against the Buffalo Bills, to the delight of Saints fans and fantasy football GMs everywhere.
Those five TD strikes puts Brees atop the NFL record books , being the eighth five-touchdown game of his career. Brees previously shared the record with Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning. Brees had already become sixth all-time in passing this season.
“It’s good when you can not play your best and make certain mistakes and still win like we did,” Brees said post-game, acknowledging some of the miscues the Saints offense had to work through to get the win.
“If we continue to repeat these mistakes they will get us beat,” Brees continued. “That’s not good enough for us. We’ve set the bar high. We have a high standard. We want to be as perfect as we can out there.”
Those mistakes from Drew Brees and the Saints include multiple penalties before the snap, blown scoring opportunities, and only having 10 men on the field on two occasions.
Drew Brees spread the ball around on those five TD strikes. Brees went to WR Lance Moore for the first score and then twice each to TE Jimmy Graham and rookie WR Kenny Stills, who had three receptions for 129 yards, 111 of which came on those two TD catches.
”You never know who’s day it’s going to be,” said Brees. ”We always come in with a game plan that has opportunities for everybody.”
Graham, one of Brees’ favorite targets, wasn’t slowed down by the pain he’s been playing with in his injured left foot, pain he may have to play through the rest of the season.
”I’m going to do as much as they want me to do and what my body allows,” Graham said.
For fantasy football fans, Brees’ five TDs and 332 passing yards were good for 33 points in standard scoring. Brees became the first QB to score 30 or better in three separate games this year.
Drew Brees and the Saints take their show on the road next week to face off in matinee action against the middling New York Jets. Brees’ 3rd-ranked passing offense will match up against the Jets ‘ 14th-ranked pass defense.
