Rumored Terminator 5 director Alan Taylor still won’t confirm or deny his involvement with the project despite constant inquiries from the press.
While promoting his Marvel movie Thor: The Dark World , IGN asked Taylor if he would step behind the camera for the next installment in the long-running franchise. Instead of giving any definitive answers on the subject, the filmmaker decided to avoid the question altogether.
When IGN asked Alan Taylor if Paramount Pictures would move forward with Teminator 5 without Arnold Schwarzenegger, the director seemed to think it was possible. However, that doesn’t mean it should happen.
“One could, but I don’t know that I would,” he explained during the interview.
Although Alan Taylor hasn’t confirmed his involvement with Terminator 5 , this hasn’t stopped the filmmaker from discussing the project. During a chat with Film School Rejects earlier this month, Taylor said the movie wasn’t a complete reboot of the series.
“The first one was more of a low-budget horror movie, while the second one was more an amazingly well-produced, glossy thriller with a sci-fi concept. They were both so successful, so there’s certain things you learn from them,” Taylor said.
He continued, “If you’re going to try and enter the franchise, you better try to come in at that level. Also, it’s a challenging thing, because what they have in mind is a reboot but not an entirely different way of thinking.”
Should Alan Taylor sign on to direct Terminator 5 , the director plans to take a cue from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight playbook. Apparently Taylor has a lot of respect for the Interstellar director’s Batman trilogy.
“I think there is another famous franchise that had a wonderful beginning and then turned a little bananas….Tim Burton’s first Batman is just glorious and by the time it got around to nipples on costumes and all that stuff it sort of lost its way. And for [Christopher] Nolan to come in an say ‘I respect this material so much I’m going to take it up to (hand motion) here, that’s a great inspiration.’ I think any version, whoever is directing Terminator, would be very respectful and serve the first two and probably feel a bit more freedom by the end.”
Regardless of who ends up taking the job, executives at Paramount Pictures plan to have the movie ready to go by July 1, 2015. Do you think the Thor: The Dark World director is the right guy to tackle the forthcoming reboot?
