Portia De Rossi is shooting down rumors that her drastic transformation in the fourth season of Arrested Development is the result of plastic surgery.
When the cult series returned after a seven-year hiatus , many fans were shocked to see what De Rossi’s character, Lindsay Bluth-Funke, looked like after all that time.
Viewers speculated that De Rossi had Botox, a nose job, fillers, and all sorts of other work done. Even plastic surgeons were asked if they thought she had gone under the knife, and they said yes. But Jezebel posits that Lindsay’s plastic surgery has been a running joke on the show, and that after seven years and inching closer to the half a century mark, Michael’s vain adopted twin sister would have work done. After all, there were recent photos of De Rossi looking like her usual self just a week before the season premiered.
De Rossi told PEOPLE magazine that she didn’t want to “chase” what she looked like at 20 . She attributed her youthful appearance to her vegan diet and teenage fashion.
“As women we’re so conditioned to think that beauty and age are very important — that you stay kind of youthful in order to be beautiful,” she said. “I don’t think it’s fair for people to think that women are just vain because they’re worried about getting older. It’s actually really linked in with a lot of very primitive stuff for women.”
Like her cast mates, De Rossi was surprised to find out Arrested Development was coming back .
“When we were canceled back in 2006, I would have never imagined that we would do this revival for Netflix or be a part of this kind of business model where they can release all the episodes at the same time,” she said. “But a part of me knew because the cast loved the show much and loved working with each other… that I kind of figured that we would all get together again at some point to do something.”
