A dog, who had been dumped in a south Dallas park to fend for himself, became a hero on Tuesday evening by leading rescue workers to a litter of sick puppies. The rescuers were trying to capture the male dog, who had eluded their efforts for weeks. When he began barking at them, they were surprised.

As reported by CBS Channel 11 News in Dallas, the rescuers knew from their previous attempts at rescuing him that the behavior was unusual for the dog . One of those who had been trying to help the abandoned dog was worried he was sick, but John Miller, who is a dog behaviorist, thought the dog was trying to tell them something.

“I told her, I bet you he’s trying to get you to follow him. Every time we got closer he would go away and bark at us saying, ‘Keep coming. Keep coming my way’.”

The dog, who has since been aptly named “Hero,” led them into some dense woods. They were about halfway to a trail when the workers began to hear soft whines and recognized them as puppy sounds. According to Fox News, Marina Tarashevsce, who is an animal rescue worker for Dallas Dogrrr — Rescue, Rehab, Reform, said she had always seen Hero with a female they named Mona, and she thought maybe something was wrong with her .

“I had suspected that [Mona was] pregnant, so that’s why I followed him. I still can’t believe it, that he actually led me to the puppies. But I’m so thankful because we wouldn’t have found them otherwise.”

They found 10 shivering puppies in a burnt out tree by a creek, along with their exhausted mom. Both Miller and Tarashevsce were amazed by the find. Miller expressed his feelings about the rescue.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve heard about stuff like this but it was awesome to witness it.”

They took them back to the rescue center, where they are now dry and warm. The center plans to keep the puppies until they are weaned and then find them good homes. Hero was rescued as well — finally.

This is the second time within a week an abandoned dog has been rescued. As the Inquisitr reported, a man found an abandoned dog locked in a crate and now has a new companion. Unfortunately, dog abandonment is common and with the dogs left to fend for themselves, they usually form packs to help each other survive.
