A few year ago, Zeb Colter was a hugely successful heel manager in the WWE, a role that he sees similar to that which won Donald Trump the recent presidential election. He managed the team of Jack Swagger and Cesaro, who were called the Real Americans. The heel persona that Zeb Colter played was a redneck who felt that the Latino wrestlers in the WWE needed to go back to Mexico and that they presented a danger to white America.
In a recent interview with PW Torch , Zeb Colter recalled a story from WrestleMania 29 where he met Donald Trump backstage at the event. In the interview, Zeb Colter joked that he believes that Donald Trump stole his gimmick to run for president of the United States.
At WrestleMania 29 , Zeb Colter managed Jack Swagger and spoke consistently about the ignorance of Americans because they allowed Mexicans into the country. Zeb Colter said that he wanted to bring about their vision of what America should be, attacking the then-face Alberto Del Rio and breaking the ankle of Del Rio’s ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez.
At WrestleMania 29 , Alberto Del Rio defended his WWE world championship against Jack Swagger, with Zeb Colter at ringside with him. Before the match, Zeb Colter cut a promo about walking the streets of a dirty New York City that was bad because so many people sneak across the borders and ruin our country.
Zeb Colter then went on to say that people talk Spanish, Greek, Chinese, and more, and that Americans are too gutless to do anything about it. He then said that Jack Swagger would do something about it in the ring. The fans booed because, at that time, fans were completely against the racist comments that Zeb Colter was saying. There was one person in attendance who liked the promo though, and that was Donald Trump.
“A match or two later, Donald Trump walked in the viewing area with his daughter and his two sons. He walked up to me and tapped me on the shoulder and I looked up and it’s Donald Trump. He stuck out his hand and we started shaking hands and he said, ‘I really, really enjoyed your speech. It was fantastic.’ Then he walked off. And then I got to thinking when he started running, what he did is he stole my gimmick. He just renamed it ‘Make America Great again’ instead.”
This is an interesting, and funny, comment. During his time as a heel manager in the WWE, Zeb Colter made all kinds of racist comments that kept fans booing him. Three years later, Donald Trump makes similar comments and becomes the president-elect of the United States. These are changing times in the country.

While Zeb Colter sees irony in Donald Trump winning the election, former WWE world champion Hulk Hogan finds it inspirational. Hulk Hogan was fired by the WWE for racist comments and the Inquisitr reported that he was one of the outspoken individuals who is happy with the results of the election.
If the majority of the United States can ignore Donald Trump’s comments, maybe the WWE can forgive Hulk Hogan as well. There is also the fact that the Washington Post reported that Vince McMahon and Linda McMahon donated $6 million to the Super PAC that backed Donald Trump in this campaign.
It is interesting to see the similarities between Zeb Colter and his heel promos, and Donald Trump and his presidential promises. It will remain interesting to watch to see how the WWE storylines reflect the current national discourse, and Donald Trump as president, over the next four years.
