According to Joni Mitchell, Taylor Swift isn’t fit to portray her in the planned big-screen adaptation of Girls Like Us. The 71-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter was reportedly upset by the possibility of having the 24-year-old country sweetheart star in the film. So she took action to prevent it from happening.
“ Joni Mitchell herself stopped Taylor Swift from stepping into her shoes,” the Inquisitr previously reported. What was Joni Mitchell’s complaint about Taylor Swift? Apparently, her cheekbones are her only notable feature in the beloved singer’s opinion.
Mitchell explained to the Sunday Times how she put the kibosh on Taylor being cast in the role.
“I squelched that [Taylor Swift starring as Joni Mitchell in Girls Like Us ]. I said to the producer, ‘All you’ve got is a girl with high cheekbones.”
Talk of Swift being cast as Mitchell began back in 2012. It isn’t really even clear exactly what Mitchell’s assessment of Swift and her high cheekbones means, but it was enough to inspire her to stymie production of the biopic. According to News Oxy , “people in the industry say it might not ever happen.”
Until recently, people were left to wonder why the biopic was not in production yet. However, it wasn’t just Taylor Swift and her high cheekbones that had Joni Mitchell stepping in to stop production of the flick. She reportedly objected to the content of the script itself. More specifically, she had criticism for the source material written by New York Times bestselling author Sheila Weller, who penned the book Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon–And the Journey of a Generation .
“It’s just a lot of gossip, you don’t have the great scenes. There’s a lot of nonsense about me in books…assumptions, assumptions, assumptions.”
Although Swift was never confirmed in the role, she did seem excited about the prospect two years ago. According to Rolling Stone , the singer was asked about playing Mitchell at the time, but she indicated that she couldn’t really discuss the role unless it was official.
“That’s actually not confirmed. I wish I could say it’s confirmed! But the thing about movies that I’ve learned is – I’ve been reading scripts for five years, and you just don’t know what ones are going to get greenlit and which ones aren’t, so I can’t talk about it unless it’s the real thing.”
Comments are welcome. Would you have paid to see Taylor Swift as Joni Mitchell on the big screen?
