A Massachusetts-based Uber taxi driver has been arrested for sexually assaulting a woman, reports USA Today . Authorities have arrested a man identified as Alejandro Done, after a woman reported that she was sexually assaulted a woman. The 46-year-old man was arraigned at the Cambridge District Court on Wednesday following his arrest. According to Fox News , the driver has pleaded not guilty to his charges, which include rape and kidnapping.
According to investigators, the Uber driver had picked up the woman after she summoned the taxi using the ride-sharing service. The incident reportedly happened on December 6, after the woman hired the Uber cab to take her to her home in Cambridge. Once the cab arrived, the driver made it clear that she would have to pay him in cash. The woman agreed, and he took her to an ATM from where she withdrew the money. Once back in the car, Alejandro drove his car to a secluded location where the woman was sexually assaulted.
Uber has confirmed that they are aware of the development, and said it is working closely with law enforcement to assist in the investigation.
The news of this latest case of sexual assault by a Uber cab driver comes just days after several other cases of sexual assault have been reported from Uber cabs across the globe. The most prominent case came from India, where a Uber cab driver confessed to raping a woman while on duty. After the face of the rapist in the New Delhi case was revealed, several other women too came to the fore reporting that the man had assaulted them as well.
Following the reports of rape, several states in India have banned the use of Uber and other app-based cab services. Uber has also been blamed for failing to comply with local legislation.
More recently, Uber received a lot of bad press after it introduced surge pricing following the Sydney hostage crisis.
Would you be concerned in using the Uber app to hire a cab the next time you are looking for one?
