A lot of the talk right now in the WWE is the John Cena return and the chance that he could break “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair’s record of 16 world titles. Cena needs only one more world title win to tie Flair’s record, and the chances he does that in 2017 are high. However, there is another WWE superstar that thinks he can hit that number as well.
In an interview with Tom Clark’s Main Event , Randy Orton said that he thinks he could hit as many as 17 world title runs before he retires . At the moment, Randy Orton is a 12-time world champion.
“I’ve definitely got a few more [world title reigns] left in me. I’d say maybe even a handful.”
Randy Orton broke into the WWE the same year as John Cena. The two have been linked thanks to that ever since, and both men have enjoyed huge success in the WWE. While Cena held the world title three times and the WWE title 12 times, Randy Orton held the world title four times and the WWE title eight times.
Most recently, Randy Orton and John Cena feuded in 2013 when Orton was the WWE champion and Cena was the world champion. At the Tables, Ladders and Chairs PPV that year, Orton beat Cena to unify the two titles and held it until Daniel Bryan won the title at WrestleMania the next year.
Randy Orton turned face after a summer of feuding with The Shield when Triple H chose Seth Rollins to be the next big thing, and Orton rejected the move. Since then, Orton feuded with Sheamus for what seemed like forever.
This year at SummerSlam , Randy Orton returned from an injury to face Brock Lesnar and was beaten into a bloody mess. It seemed he was dead in the water, but Orton doesn’t see it that way. In an interview with USA Today , Randy Orton feels that match created a buzz and kept both men in the public’s eye.
After that, Randy Orton started feuding with Bray Wyatt and the Wyatt Family, but he shocked the WWE Universe when he stopped the feud to join the Wyatt Family. Many thought it was just a way for Randy Orton to get into Bray’s head, but they have since become an unstoppable unit.
In the Tom Clark’s Main Event interview, Randy Orton said that joining the Wyatt Family has given him more of a “pep in my step,” and it has revitalized his career. Randy points to wrestling with younger talent who are hungry to get better as a reason why he has a new life in his career now.
“I’m a 12-time world champion. I’ve accomplished so much in the WWE. I just go out there and continue to entertain people and get my kids excited because they get to watch daddy on TV, those kinds of rewards, that’s what I’m doing it for now…
“For the immediate future and, s**t, for 10 more years, I would love to, if I’m able to, wrestle. This is what I enjoy doing.”
Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt most recently won the SmackDown Live tag team titles from Heath Slater and Rhyno and looked almost unstoppable. They will use the “Freebird Rule” and let Luke Harper also defend the belts.
