There were a lot of things on which to blame the fall of WCW, which led to the WWE buying the company. Much of it had to do with bad booking decisions. While not at the top of the list of bad booking decisions, one poor decision was having Bill Goldberg win his first WCW world title on free TV on WCW Monday Nitro instead of on a well-built PPV.
Hulk Hogan appeared on Eric Bischoff’s podcast this week and said that it was his idea to make the quick change to put the title on Bill Goldberg on free TV. He called it something that was not thought through well at all.
“I just called [Eric Bischoff] in panic and thought I had this great idea. We should have thought it through. Everybody says we should have built it up more… I was panicking because I was afraid we’d miss that moment, you know? I knew the Georgia Dome would be his home. It would be electric.”
Hulk Hogan was right. One thing that WCW was good at was throwing out surprises on WCW Monday Nitro . Whether it was Scott Hall showing up out of nowhere, Ultimate Warrior making his return, or Bill Goldberg shockingly winning the world title, they were all events that resulted in huge moments in the history of WCW.

However, one of the biggest complaints about WCW was that they were willing to give away things for free that could have been great on a PPV that made WCW even more money. Having Bill Goldberg come onto the world title scene and then chase Hulk Hogan for the title would have been great money.
Instead of the build for the babyface chasing the title, and eventually winning it, Hulk Hogan wanted to make the move quick in the hometown of Bill Goldberg. As PWTorch reported, it resulted in a huge pop and a big moment, but it was over with immediately and the chase was one-and-done.

Of course, this wasn’t the only blunder for Hulk Hogan in his WCW career. One of the biggest mistakes that WCW made was giving Bill Goldberg his first loss to Kevin Nash, thanks to a Scott Hall cattle prod, and putting the title on Nash. The big mistake here was the Fingerpoke of Doom, where Hulk Hogan just touched Kevin Nash and then pinned him to become champion again. WCW couldn’t really recover from that one.
It was also Hulk Hogan who influenced the end of the world title match with Sting. This was a match built right, with Sting staying out of action for years and then finally coming after Hulk Hogan. The fans were ecstatic for Sting to come back and finally beat Hulk Hogan.

Instead, Hulk Hogan and Sting put on a lackluster match that saw Bret Hart come down and cheat to help Sting win the title. Sting, the huge babyface, should have won cleanly, but Hogan wanted the end to be controversial to protect him. It ruined what should have been the biggest moment in WCW history.
It was nice to hear Hulk Hogan take responsibility for something like the Bill Goldberg title win, but that doesn’t make it a surprise. Hulk Hogan had control over almost everything he was involved in with WCW, which is why he was pretty much fired on a live PPV broadcast when he refused to lose to Jeff Jarrett. This was just another bad decision that led to the fall of WCW.
