Lady Gaga’s David Bowie tribute at the 2016 Grammys was one of the most talked-about performances on Monday night.
Paying tribute to a musical icon such as David Bowie was a daunting task even for Gaga, but the 29-old-singer proved on Monday that she was up to the challenge.
After Lady Gaga’s performance, there’s no clear consensus on whether it was good or not. The reviews are mixed at best. Rolling Stone described Lady Gaga’s effects-heavy tribute as “astonishing.” Vox was less impressed, saying that “her kinetic energy made the performance feel more like ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ or ‘Monster Mash’ than a tribute to Bowie.”
Unfortunately for Lady Gaga, Duncan Jones, the son of David Bowie and his first wife Angie, seem to have echoed Vox ‘s scathing review when he published a cryptic post on Twitter following Monday’s Grammy performances, as reported by NBC . Duncan Jones didn’t exactly mention Lady Gaga’s name, but the content of the tweet itself is highly suggestive of his discontent with the performance.

“overexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm; mentally confused.” Damn it! What IS that word!?” Duncan’s tweet went.
For those who haven’t noticed, the tweet contained the dictionary definition of the word “gaga,” which is an obvious reference to the “Bad Romance” singer.

Duncan Jones’s tweet received mixed reactions, with a majority of them calling out the director for being mean-spirited and ungrateful for dissing on an artist who gave her heart and soul to honor the memory of his father.
Lady Gaga’s David Bowie tribute at the Grammys was a song medley that ran through some of David Bowie’s most memorable hits, which included “Space Oddity,” “Changes,” “Fame,” “Let’s Dance,” and “Heroes.” The performance involved a plethora of multi-colored lights and multiple costume-changes, and it was bolstered by a huge monitor in the background showing psychedelic images reminiscent of the Bowie’s visual aesthetic.
Wearing a shoulder-padded blue dress coat reminiscent of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust persona, and sporting the traditional blue eyeshadow and flame hair, Lady Gaga had a striking resemblance to Bowie in the performance.
It certainly looked like Lady Gaga gave her all in the performance. The American singer has been very vocal about her love for David Bowie, whom she referred to one as one of her greatest heroes. Her love for the “Labyrinth” singer was so great that she even had an image of the music legend’s face tattooed on her side , as reported in Hollywood Life .
Chic’s Nile Rodgers, musical director for Gaga’s stunning David Bowie tribute, had nothing but praises for Lady Gaga, as reported in Rolling Stone .
“I’ve never seen anyone approach a project with quite this intensity,” he said of the singer. “It was almost as if she was doing an all-encompassing film, like when Daniel Day-Lewis played Lincoln or something. She was in it, man!”
So how did Lady Gaga react when she finally got wind of Duncan Jones’s Twitter shade on her Bowie tribute? According to a source from Hollywood Life , the American singer handled the criticism with grace.
“Lady Gaga believes everyone is entitled to their own opinion, including David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones. She is, and always has been, a huge fan of David Bowie, his music, and what he stood for. She gave it her all [at The Grammys] and hopes she did the legendary rocker justice. She’s just super grateful she got to pay her respects by honoring him on such a special night.”

How would you rate Lady Gaga’s tribute performance? Do you think Duncan Jones was justified in stating his dislike for the performance on the social media stage?
