Vince Young Released By Green Bay Packers

Vince Young has been released by the Green Bay Packers.

Young tweeted Saturday morning, “Thanks to the @packers for the opportunity great organization great team wonderful fans good luck this season.”

Two minutes after Young’s post, at 10:42 am, NFL Network and NFL.com national insider Ian Rapoport tweeted, “Vince Young was just released by the #Packers, source says.”

The 30-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Packers on August 6 after a successful workout with the team. He was expected to serve as a more dependable backup to Aaron Rodgers, but likely wouldn’t have seen much action — Rodgers has missed only two starts since earning the starting position in 2008. His competition, Graham Harrell and BJ Coleman, initially failed to make much of an impression in the early stages of camp.

The announcement that Young was cut wasn’t much of a surprise. According to NFL.com , Young made a lot of snaps during the preseason and practice, and the Packers evaluated whether or not he could be the primary backup to Rodgers. Now Coleman is the only other quarterback on the Packers’ roster.

Green Bay could bring the Houston native back after Week 1, but that scenario isn’t likely.

Vince Young was drafted by the Tennessee Titans as the third overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. He spent the first five seasons of his career with the team, and was released on July 28, 2011.

The Pro Bowler was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles the next day, and declared that the Eagles would become the “Dream Team.” The team won its first game with Young on November 20, and lost the second. In Young’s third and final start with the team on, he threw one touchdown and four interceptions for a loss to the Seattle Seahawks, dropping the Eagles’ record to 4-8.

Young then signed a deal with the Buffalo Bills on May 11, 2012, and was released on August 27 .
