The Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke thriller Getaway is currently the worst-reviewed movie of 2013. The flick hits theaters across the country today (August 30).
Although this year has produced some overwhelmingly awful films, director Courtney Solomon’s high-octane action picture is currently sitting at the bottom of the proverbial barrel. It will be interesting to see what audiences think of the movie over the holiday weekend.
As of this writing, Getaway has a Rotten Tomatoes score of one percent. Only one critic out of 72 thought the endeavor was worth the price of a ticket. The film’s Internet Movie Database score isn’t much better; the movie currently sports a rating of 3.8. That’s definitely not a good thing.
If the folks at Warner Bros. Pictures were hoping to get some love from Metacritic , then they might want to prepare for the worst. The movie has a rating of 25 at the website, a score that suggests Getaway might be worth skipping until it lands on Hulu, Netflix, or another streaming service.
The negative reviews for the film are entertaining reads for sure, but The Playlist writer Drew Taylor’s Getaway review takes the proverbial cake.
“It’s understandable that larger scale movies will want to spawn sequels, but this is about two degrees away from being a movie that premieres on Cinemax on a Friday night, sandwiched between two soft core porn movies with funny titles. ‘Getaway’ is stuck in neutral. And that’s where it’ll stay,” he wrote.
In the spirit of fairness, here’s a excerpt from the only positive review currently hiding out on Rotten Tomatoes. This one comes from Norman Wilner of NOW Toronto .
“Director Courtney Solomon makes sure the pace never flags, holding our attention with complex multi-camera coverage, and Hawke does just the tiniest bit more acting than necessary for a genre piece,” he wrote in his critique of the flick.
Getaway is in theaters right now. Approach this flick with extreme caution.
