Brand New ‘Man Of Steel’ Trailer Arrives: A Very Human Superman

Forget the disappointment of the teasers, Warner Bros. have just unleashed the brand new Man of Steel trailer and — frankly — it’s stunning.

Powerfully emotive, Henry Cavill looks utterly unfazed by the task of taking on one of the most classical, iconic figures in fantasy movie history — let alone DC Comics .

Shooting for gritty, realistic production values, the trailer delivers on just about every level possible.

Luminous music opens on a shot of Cavill, prostrate and underwater. Almost immediately we cut to a very young Clark Kent being guided out of a meltdown by his mother.

This is followed by scenes of water filling a school bus and a nascent hero’s first taste of a hard choice. Shot after shot, we are taken through the beats of a well-worn back story, but this time with real bite.

Glimpses of seriously great looking action sequences tease in the second half of the trailer.

A familiar story of youthful alienation and the fear of a secret discovered plays out in a scene where Kevin Costner tells his adolescent, alien son:

“You just have to decide what kind of man you wanna grow up to be Clark, whoever that man is.”

Which, if you think about it, is a question many have asked or been asked.

Perhaps that’s the reason for the enduring power of the Superman story and why so many can’t wait to see Michael Shannon as Zod, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and a rebooted, relatable, new millennium Superman.

Directed by Zack Snyder, penned by David S. Goyer, and produced by Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Deborah Snyder and Christopher Nolan, Man of Steel will be released in IMAX 3D and hits theaters on June 14, 2013.

Next summer can’t come soon enough.
