Vince McMahon is 71-years-old and has been in the wrestling business for his entire life, but it can’t last forever. Sure, he has his children who could take over for him and even a son-in-law in Triple H who is groomed to step into his place upon his retirement. One would always think that a McMahon family member would be in control of WWE, but it appears as if Vinnie Mac isn’t totally against selling the company.
Well, he’s willing to sell it if the offer is right and under one other condition.
The third quarter earnings call for WWE took place this past Thursday, and according to the New York Post , Vince McMahon had some interesting things to say. He’s not necessarily looking to sell WWE or get rid of it anytime soon, but the idea of making a sale isn’t totally off of the table.
“We’re open to anything.”
Alright, so that doesn’t exactly mean he’s going out there and putting WWE up for sale on Craigslist or anything. Sure, it would take a lot for any possible interested party to buy the company and get it out of control of the McMahon family.
Vince McMahon has always been someone that has wanted to do things on his own and that is why it was so shocking when he gave so much control to his daughter Stephanie and her husband Triple H. Then, Vince’s son Shane McMahon made his return to the company earlier in 2016 after being gone for close to seven years.
As Vince gets older, though, he may think that other suitors and investors may take care of his creation and do it justice.
The only thing is that WWE may be willing to listen to offers and entertain any money that prospective buyers may want to throw forth, but there is something else. Vince said that anyone who would want to possibly purchase WWE would have to allow the company to “control its destiny.”
Aside from getting a good price for WWE, that is his one big condition.
As Triple H and Stephanie McMahon take more control of the company, Vince still appears to have the final say. That makes perfect sense as WWE is still his company and it wouldn’t be shocking if any final decisions had to go through him.
Wrestling Inc. reported that Vince isn’t entirely sure how much control would be lost or left to the McMahon family if WWE was sold. Any kind of contract or purchase agreement would likely have intricate and detailed wording that allowed the company, and the McMahons, to still do their own thing within the ring and backstage.
He may have made some interesting and questionable decisions over the years as far as fans are concerned, but Vince McMahon is no dummy.
Ted Turner likely isn’t going get back into the wrestling business and try to purchase WWE, but he likely doesn’t have the funds needed to do so. As reported by Fox Sports this summer, UFC was sold to new owners for $4 billion and maybe that group of owners would like one of the other biggest entertainment companies in the world. There is no way of knowing who as a single owner or group of owners who culd step up to make an offer. Well, that is, if it ever even happens at all.
Right now, WWE is not necessarily on the table with a price tag attached to it, but Vince McMahon is finally letting the world know that a sale isn’t impossible.
For Vince McMahon to sell WWE, it would take a lot of different factors to have to come together and work perfectly. His one condition of the new owner letting WWE “control its destiny” is something that wouldn’t be hard to do because if something isn’t broke, no reason in trying to fix it. Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, or Shane McMahon could be the sole owner one day, but it’s not totally out of the question for someone else to own WWE if the price is right.
