Joss Whedon has become a comic-book darling after his Avengers movie dominated the summer box office this year despite having to do battle with the likes of the Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises . So, it’s not like he needs to prove anything by making a sequel to his superhero epic.
The director has already confirmed that he will return to the series with The Avengers 2 already set to be released in the summer of 2015 but he has now revealed his thought process behind his decision:
“I was in London and I went to a pub and had some fish and chips and a pint and started writing in my notebook. I’m writing if I was going to do this what would I say and 40 minutes later I filled the notebook. So I text my agent and said to make the deal.”
Whedon continued :
“I’m so in love with that universe and the characters and the way they were played and I have so much more I want to do with them. I know I can’t match the success of the first one but I can try to make a better film and that’s what I’m excited about, that’s the new room of fear I’m entering now.”
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator also admitted that there was a business aspect to his quandary but that the main reason for his reluctance to sign onto another Avengers feature was his fear of telling a bad story.
And what with his TV series of the S.H.I.E.L.D. and his adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing also on the horizon, it seems like Whedon has very much got his hands full for the foreseeable future.
